OPEN LETTER TO 9ICE

When I say Abolore Adegbola Akande, that would surely not ring a bell. But 9ice, that is as popular as Nigeria’s national anthem. The Gongo Aso crooner has carved a niche for himself when it comes to Yoruba-inspired hip-hop. So, I never put up a fuss when he sang in his hit track, Gongo Aso, that “categorically am the best mentally”. He surely created his world and basked in its euphoria. Check his achievements and see why he stands aloof ahead others.

Two things kept me musing about “Omo Iya Agba Loke Aro” (the child of aged mother in Oke Aro). I was relistening to his breakthrough-to-stardom track, Gongo Aso, then got captivated with his top-notch goal lyric “…don’t doubt me, I go bring home Grammy”. He even proceeded to qualify himself “…incredible, unbeatable, reliable…” No employer of labour would hear these qualities and be unwilling to employ such endowed employee. I concurred with his goal, having carted numerous national and international laurels. Many other teeming fans did same like a button-activated machine.

I was however shell-shocked in February that Mr. Gongo Aso has decided to turn off his microphone to become a politician. He made this known during an interview with Channels Television that he will contest for a House of Representatives position in 2015. In fact, he is currently enrolled in online classes at Capella University, Minneapolis, Minnesota, U.S.A to study Public Administration.

More than a thousand questions began to stream and are still streaming through my consciousness. Could this be true? What becomes of Alapomeji brand? What of the Grammy goal? What could have caused the sudden change? Why now?

While 9ice’s fans are still flummoxed by his sudden and absurd loss of focus, news filtered the media once more that 9ice is to feature in an upcoming movie, Jejere, produced by Laide Bakare. The former crux was desertion of music for politics. Now, turning to movie would be another thing for his fans to be concerned about.

It has thus dawned on all 9ice’s fans that Basorun Gaa could be the last we shall get to enjoy from the Gongo Aso crooner. Neither will the hope of clinching the highly-valued Grammy award come to fruition. Oh! May be 9ice has now unraveled his political side. The attitude of most Nigerian politicians, “make promise but not fulfill it”.

Just musing!

9ice has talent - no doubt and he has carved a musically exciting niche for himself yet like many celebrities all over the world. This one has a cupboard filled with skeletons in designer wears. I dare to say that his personal life is as screwed up as that a man who wears a religious garment during the day and runs after little whores under the cover of darkness. As an artiste, i love 9ice but as a fellow Naija brother, the dude is nothing but an asshole (no apologies pls). Thanks for the brilliant piece Femi. I'm sure this is the beginning of many good things to come.
