ARSENAL FC MIDFIELDER EMBARRASSED AFTER CAR BREAKS DOWN

Emmanuel Frimpong of Arsenal, who returned to full training recently, was caught red-faced as he got stuck in the "middle of nowhere" after running out of petrol on Monday.

The notorious tweeter posted the above picture of his stranded car, and added this message: "This has to 2 the most embarassin day of my life my car just broke down in the middle of nowhere.#Nodiesel Times r hard."

What next for Gunners fans? Maybe Jack Wilshere, also recently back into training, will leave his radio on all night and run out of battery.

Here is my candid advise Frimpong, you had better stick to public transport to save you more embarrassing moments. Abi? I hope I advised well or what do you think?

SERENA AND VENUS WILLIAMS TO VISIT LAGOS

London 2012 Olympic gold medalists Serena and Venus Williams will visit Lagos, come October 30th till November 2nd, 2012.

These tennis beauties are coming to Nigeria as part of their first ever tour to the African continent.

Well, I wasn't surprised they made Nigeria their point first of call ahead South Africa, which is their next tour country. Did you know they had a sister named Yetunde? May be during their tennis clinic at the Lagos Tennis Club in Onikan, we would be able to know their family connection with Nigeria.

IN HONOUR OF RUGGEDMAN...NIGERIAN MUSIC: THE GOOD, THE BAD, THE UGLY

Ruggedman
Yesterday was the birthday of Ruggedman, which also explains why he named his clothing line SEPTEMBER 20. A lot of surprises here and there for the veteran, vibrant and controversial rapper. Well from my own end, while about to register my birthday wish on his wall, I remembered I once wrote a muse on Ruggedman's debut track, Ehen. I thus went through some of my old write-ups then found this unedited piece I wrote in 2004. Well, I was still a curb writer then...though a bit shallow, you would enjoy it.

NIGERIAN MUSIC: THE GOOD, THE BAD, THE UGLY
"If music is the food of love, play it on", writes Shakespeare in his book, the Twelfth Night. In the present (2004) Nigerian music industry, music is not only the food of love but as a tool of correction and a source of making cool money than what Shakespear said it is.

For Ruggedman, music is rather a means of correcting the impropers in the Nigerian music industry. Before time, Nigerians have been complaining about the lack of creativity of the in-coming Nigerian music artistes. One would definitely reason along with in his debut track, Ehen, for castigating Maintain whose beats and styles then were often adaptations of foreign music. As Ruggedman had said in Ehen, it is certain that if Maintain had been abroad, they would have been possibly sued for copyright infringement.

Apart from Maintain who were criticized by Ruggedman, Rasqie was however not left out. Rasqie, whose hit track Soji, made a great hit in the market, received one of his greatest disappointment while singing Ati Ready at the 2005 Kennis Music Easter Fiesta held at a Lagos beach. The audience present at the Fiesta booed Rasqie and his dancers to indicate their disapproval of his music. Critically listening to the music, Ati Ready, if not for the sonorous sound used, the whole music would have been rendered useless. From all indications, it seems people have begun to recognise good music.

As part of the correction measures, Eedris Abdulkareem and Black Reverendz were not set aside in Ruggedman's "correction note", Ehen. Abdulkareem was criticised of not doing an audible rap by Ruggedman. This almost made him turn a reggae artiste, thereby making him sing the song, Jagajaga, which was however banned from broadcast by President Olusegun Obasanjo for alleged slandering of the nation's image. Pertaining to the Black Reverendz, Ruggedman's criticism is basically justified considering the fact that these guys showed their shortage of creativity and lackadaisical nature. Following the Reverendz's hit track, Ayangba, in their debut album, they are yet to make wave in the music industry.

On the other side of the Nigerian music, some of the big guns artiste in the Nigerian movie industry have now seen the music sector as a source of making their money since little or no money is anymore derived from the movie industry. Popular movie artistes like Stella Damasus Aboderin, Genevieve Nnaji, Ramsey Nouah Jnr., Saheed Balogun and Bose Olubo are already battling it out in the music industry. If all feelers were right, there are possibilities that more artistes from the movie industry would find their way into the music industry.

For Styl-Plus, they wouldn't have made a lot of sales with their debut CD if not for their hit tracks Olufunmi, which was loved by Nigerians. People would have castigated these artistes for having just two tracks, Olufunmi and Runaway, in their debut CD album; no thanks to Olufunmi Remix, Olufunmi Instrumentals, Olufunmi Instrumentals Remix, Runaway Remix and Runaway Instrumentals, which were included in the debut album to make the tracks amount to seven. However, some Nigerians complained of being meticulously ripped of their money.

Subsequently, TuFace Idibia distinguished himself among the lots by serving Nigerians and 2004 Kora Music Award Attendees; African Queen, which became a 'national anthem' in the mouths of Nigerians. This track helped Kennis Music in a lot of ways to sell over 200,000 CD copies.

As time goes on, one hopes that the Nigerian music industry will eventually become one of the tools to salvage the Nigerian deteriorating entertainment industry, like the movie industry (Nollywood) did, thereby becoming the acclaimed third most movie-producing country after Hollywood and Bollywood.

PICTURE: NIGERIAN GAYS PROTEST

If I were told the gay thing subsists in Nigeria, I would think twice. Well, while perusing the internet for any interesting piece, then I came across this!

Wait a minute, what were they thinking? Could this have been a play-act? Or what do you think?

MOVIE REVIEW: EXPENDABLES 2

"The Expendables 2" is what happens when Sylvester Stallone decides, after having tried his hand on the first, that he's capable of writing a script for a major motion picture. Some of these guys are still compelling screen presences (including Stallone) yet the obvious limits of their physical capacity require someone who knows how to write original dialogue and create a compelling narrative for them to inhabit. The 66years old Stallone is not that guy. Though he had Richard Wenk to help him out with the screenplay but anyone who thinks Stallone deferred to Wenk is smoking some of that Afghan weed the guys from "Savages" are selling. Therefore, plot-wise, don’t expect anything terrific when you visit the cinemas.

The story begins with Stallone and Jason Statham leading a charge into a criminal encampment in Nepal in order to rescue an unidentified colleague. Setting aside the fact that Nepal has apparently become infested with palm trees and that many of the evil foot soldiers are speaking Thai. This Bond-wannabe setup turns out to be completely pointless. Its only purpose seems to be to provide Arnold Schwarzenegger with the first of several extended cameos.

After this we're introduced to the rest of the crew, including Liam Hemsworth, a fairly obvious marketing ploy intended to get the youngsters into the theaters. He's given the lamest, most cliche-riddled excuse for a backstory imaginable and then set firmly onto a red-shirt trajectory that the blind guy who lives across the hall could have seen coming a mile away.

So after the big non-setup Stallone meets with Bruce Willis' "Church" who informs him that he's got one last chance to apparently square things up between the two of them (manly men being eternally obsessed by squaring things between them you see). To do this, he must retrieve some important data from a safe being held by some more baddies. Stallone isn't told exactly what the information is and he's saddled with another marketing ploy, Nan Yu, playing "Maggie" a semi-attractive covert operative who's going to extract the info Willis is after once Stallone and Co have secured the safe.

And that's about it. Once the info is secured we're introduced to the super-evil "Villain" (wink-wink) played by Jean Claude Van Damme and his super-evil cohort, Scott Atkins, who take it from the boys by force and the rest of the film is a plodding, enervating revenge tale littered with more pointless, nonsensical cameos and recycled one-liners than a late 70s Las Vegas rat-pack review.

Randy Couture, Terry Crews and Dolph Lundgren amount to little more than talking extras, while Bruce Willis, Schwarzenegger and Chuck Norris don't do anything except stand in front of the camera a few times and fire big guns at groups of the most bumbling, inept Keystone-Cop bad guys that ever disgraced the silver screen. The film's only actual action sequences are limited to a couple of first rate ass kicking sequences given to Jet Li at the opening of the movie and Jason Statham later in the movie. Also the 'big smackdown' at the film's climax that pits Stallone against Van Damme. Other than that, "Expendables 2" is just that; expendable.

The guys here deserve a better swan song than this. To those who might say Sly's hands were tied by the advancing age of his cast, I'd direct them to check out Robert Rodriguez's breathtaking "Sin City". While it’s true that Rodriguez had Frank Miller's incredible series of graphic novels to draw from, the fact is that Miller is not the only talented writer working today and if Stallone cared enough, and wasn't so driven by the needs of his own ego, he could have found someone with the requisite skill and patience to craft an interesting, engaging tale that utilized the advancing age of the stars here as fodder for something other than lame self-effacement.

PHCN to Publish Names of Debtors

The Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) Plc will soon publish names of its debtors in the national dailies if they fail to pay their debts amounting to N16 billion.

Malam Idris Mohammed, Managing Director of the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company, said this during the First Customers Consultative Council meeting on Wednesday in Kaduna.

He expressed regret that the company had such a huge outstanding debt with electricity consumers despite all efforts to ensure regular and effective debt collection.

The managing director, who said the present debt profile of N16 billion was inimical to the company’s corporate survival, urged consumers to settle their electricity bills to ensure good service delivery at all times.

BEAUTIFY YOUR HOUSE OR GO TO JAIL- LAGOS STATE TELLS LANDLORDS

The Lagos State Government has passed a bill which requires all house owners/tenements in the state to beautify the perimeter areas of their properties with flowers or face six months imprisonment.

To ensure the execution of this bill, a new agency called Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency, LASPARK, was also inaugurated. The agency will also be in charge of managing all the 14parks and 128 landscaped beautified sites in the state.

The Commissioner for the Environment, Mr. Tunji Bello further expounded the bill:
“It is now mandatory for tenement/owners and occupiers to landscape and beautify the perimeter areas of their properties, while violation of this law shall warrant the penalty of N250,000 or such sums as the State shall incur in doing same on behalf of the tenement, or six months imprisonment or other non-custodial sentence.”
All houses in the Lagos metropolis, no matter how small or congested must plant flowers in the perimeters of their houses or face the wrath of the law, saying that the government wanted Lagos to be as beautiful as Singapore.
“The law stipulates a fine not exceeding N50,000 or one year imprisonment or other non-custodial sentences for any person or corporate body found felling or trimming trees in the state without obtaining the required permit from LASPARK.”
“It is an offence to walk on lawns and gardens instead of designated walkways; spitting, urinating or defecating in any area of the parks, gardens or opens spaces; loitering or soliciting for illegal purposes, smoking, distributing controlled substance or engaging in disorderly conduct; littering, polluting or dumping litter or refuse in any park or garden.
“Failure to control animals or allowing defecation; or engaging in unhygienic use of fountains, pools or water in the parks, gardens and open spaces, is also prohibited.”

OPEN LETTER TO 9ICE

When I say Abolore Adegbola Akande, that would surely not ring a bell. But 9ice, that is as popular as Nigeria’s national anthem. The Gongo Aso crooner has carved a niche for himself when it comes to Yoruba-inspired hip-hop. So, I never put up a fuss when he sang in his hit track, Gongo Aso, that “categorically am the best mentally”. He surely created his world and basked in its euphoria. Check his achievements and see why he stands aloof ahead others.

Two things kept me musing about “Omo Iya Agba Loke Aro” (the child of aged mother in Oke Aro). I was relistening to his breakthrough-to-stardom track, Gongo Aso, then got captivated with his top-notch goal lyric “…don’t doubt me, I go bring home Grammy”. He even proceeded to qualify himself “…incredible, unbeatable, reliable…” No employer of labour would hear these qualities and be unwilling to employ such endowed employee. I concurred with his goal, having carted numerous national and international laurels. Many other teeming fans did same like a button-activated machine.

I was however shell-shocked in February that Mr. Gongo Aso has decided to turn off his microphone to become a politician. He made this known during an interview with Channels Television that he will contest for a House of Representatives position in 2015. In fact, he is currently enrolled in online classes at Capella University, Minneapolis, Minnesota, U.S.A to study Public Administration.

More than a thousand questions began to stream and are still streaming through my consciousness. Could this be true? What becomes of Alapomeji brand? What of the Grammy goal? What could have caused the sudden change? Why now?

While 9ice’s fans are still flummoxed by his sudden and absurd loss of focus, news filtered the media once more that 9ice is to feature in an upcoming movie, Jejere, produced by Laide Bakare. The former crux was desertion of music for politics. Now, turning to movie would be another thing for his fans to be concerned about.

It has thus dawned on all 9ice’s fans that Basorun Gaa could be the last we shall get to enjoy from the Gongo Aso crooner. Neither will the hope of clinching the highly-valued Grammy award come to fruition. Oh! May be 9ice has now unraveled his political side. The attitude of most Nigerian politicians, “make promise but not fulfill it”.

Just musing!

OPEN LETTER TO PROF. WOLE SOYINKA

You may have been wondering what the content of my letter would look like? Why Prof. Wole Soyinka, but not any other person? Oh! May be you are thinking I intend to throw verbal punches at the maestro of words. Come off it! His barrage of words would be gargantuan for my cerebrum. I am just musing.

I was going through some of my paper collections and notes; then stumbled on an almost twelve years (12years) old unfulfilled promise of the prodigious Professor, who was a conspicuous member of the opposition in exile between the late 1980’s and 1999 quoted in page 5 of the of the Guardian newspaper of October 17, 1998 thus:
..the press, and let me seize this opportunity to stress this, the press has been magnificent, really magnificent, heroic and one of these days, when there’s more pleasure, we are going to see personally to this, that a statue for heroism of the press is erected at a prominent place in this country, we must never forget…

The years between the late 1980’s and 1999 in Nigeria when the country returned to civilian democracy of sorts were marked by overt state repression countervailed by the intense activity of an aroused civil society. As the throes and woes of a derailed adjustment policy, as well as the country’s pariah status in international relations hit home; sections of civil society rose in protest against the increasingly dysfunctional and venal state.

Nigeria’s vibrant media played an influential role in the struggles over democratization and a reformed polity in these years. Defying censorship laws, closure of media houses, detention and abduction of journalists and the mysterious disappearance of key opposition figures; a section of the media, drawing on a protest motif dating back to the colonial days, carried the struggle against the monumentally corrupt military class to a new pitch.

Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka experienced these heroic and indefatigable press and thus said the afore-quoted to pay tribute to them.

Sir, come October 17, your promise of an erected statue to the Nigerian press will clock twelve years old. And a twelve years old boy has begun to make plans for his future. So, on behalf of the numerous Nigerian press, both dead and alive, I ask that “When shall we have our statue erected?

Just musing!
